Sound: Wave Equation Calculations

The wave equation relates wavelength and frequency to speed. This is an equation that you should KNOW!

wavespeed (m/s) = frequency (Hz) x wavelength (m)

c = f

Make sure you know those SI prefixes! You are going to need them!

Sample question:

If wavelength () = 3 cm and frequency is 60 Hz. What is the speed of the wave ?

  • Change the wavelength into metres: 3 cm = 0.030m (remember for an equation to work the units have to be correct).
  • Use the equation:
speed = f

= 0.03 x 60

= 1.8 m/s
