Energy Menu

The concept of energy emerged in the 19th century. The idea was used to explain the work output of steam engines and then generalised to understand other heat engines. It also became a key tool for understanding chemical reactions and biological systems.

When I was at school the definition of a body 'possessing energy' was that it was 'capable of doing work'. Various types of energy changed from one form to another as 'work was done' by a system.

We also study 'energy sources' in physics - natural resources that can be used to produce electricity (our most useful energy form - as it is so versatile).
